M1, Is this the new future?
Apple recently unveiled their M1 series chips, which they are claiming to have some interesting increases in performance. To prove their point they've shown some graphs without labels, not so good move.If you are so sure about some products performance you give actual numbers/show actual figures relative to some other product or previous generations.
Ok let's get down to some real talk here, these new chips or chip architecture to be specific has got fundamental upgrade, they have gone to Reduced Instruction Set from Complex Instruction Set.I am not
writing a computer organisation article,so if you're curious by what they mean go search RISC VS CISC you'll get the Idea.
What does this transition mean to us ?
you might ask ,well it means lot to mobile devices, by mobile devices i mean laptops and smartphones included.Smartphones have been using ARM instruction sets from about decade now. Wait what's ARM now ? actually ARM is the pioneer for the RISC architecture, It's a license distributing company that licenses their new CPU designs to big players like Apple,Qualcomm,Samsung,Hauwie. So the answer to the question is :
More Battery life :
cause RISC takes way less power than X86/CISC
It's plain Physics, more power consumption more mean more current flow which means more heat.
As these chips can work on power as low as 5W they barely need active cooling.
But not everything is Unicorns and Rainbows right, as these are first gen products which might have some software compatibility issues. But for now Apple is very confident on its Rosetta2 platforms that translate X86 instructions to ARM's native binary. According to Apple Rosetta2 even outperforms
some apps that are compiled on X86 chips, that's really a bold claim.
Should I buy now ?
There are two paths here:
>Join the Party,Buy one these new macs,be the part of the transition. Btw its not easy to be a part of transition
>Wait and enjoy the party, buy the next gen stuff. They will come out more furnished and with great improvements.
But finally comes out to your workflow
Are you developer, enthusiast, eager to be a part in a transition and want to burn some money ? you go with first one.
Are you a creative guy that needs creative tools to run your creative train, then you wait for the software tools to run natively.
If you are here reading this, great this article might have achieved it's purpose.
I'll be writing every saturday, at least I'll try to write ;)
